ACADEMIC COMPUTING Y2K TESTING AND REMEDIATION REPORT 11/1/99

What follows is a brief report summarizing our activity and findings related to our Y2K testing and remediation. First of all, our methods for testing and remediation:

  1. We have tested the BIOS, operating system, and applications in our PC labs with the Norton 2000 package of utilities. This is one of the highest rated Y2K package for the PC.
  2. We are checking the websites of our software suppliers and hardware manufacturers. We are posting related information and links to these websites on the Academic Computing website at https://members.tripod.com/acfit/y2k.html.
  3. We are contacting manufacturers of software and hardware in question and arranging appropriate action in conjunction with affected departments of the college.

What follows is an area-by-area progress report:

Servers: All have been or are being upgraded to Windows NT Server Service Pack 5, as per Microsoft recommendations.

Office & Staff workstations: All workstations are being evaluated with Norton 2000. Microsoft Office 97 is being upgraded to Service Release 2B, as per Microsoft’s recommendations. Anticipated completion date: November 1999.

CC16: The Hewlett-Packard workstations are fully compliant. The software is being run in the UNIX environment, which is fully compliant.

CC40: The Hewlett-Packard workstations are fully compliant. The version of Gerber’s Accumark software that we are running under Windows 95 is not fully compliant at this time. Gerber will need to provide the upgrade, as they provide technicians to install new software and operating system changes. We are working with the Patternmaking department to expedite Gerber’s handling of this situation. Anticipated completion date: December 1999.

C205: Macintoshes are fully compliant with Y2K.

C227: All stations have been tested with Norton 2000 and have passed. Some questions were raised after reviewing the BIOS manufacturer's website; we subsequently advanced the BIOS clock manually on test stations and have continued to note no problems.

C228 & C230: These stations have passed our Y2K tests, which is not surprising since they comprise our latest purchases. We have contacted the software companies who handle InfoDesign, Lectra, and U4ia, and these applications are fully compliant.

C229: All stations have been tested with Norton 2000 and have passed. Some questions were raised after reviewing the BIOS manufacturer's website; we subsequently advanced the BIOS clock manually on test stations and have continued to note no problems. The Macintoshes in this room are fully compliant.

C231: The Macintoshes in this room are fully compliant.

C232: The Macintoshes in this room are fully compliant.

C309: All stations have been upgraded to Windows NT Workstation Service Pack 5, as per Microsoft’s recommendation. All stations have had their BIOS’s checked and adjusted by Norton 2000. Software in this room is compliant; Microsoft Office 97 Professional is being updated to Service Release 2B, as per Microsoft’s recommendation. Anticipated completion date: November 1999.

C409: All stations have had their BIOS’s checked and adjusted by Norton 2000. These are our oldest PC BIOS’s and Award Software, their manufacturer, has reported possible problems with them when the year 2000 rollover occurs. We have set the BIOS clock on test machines in these rooms ahead to 2 minutes before midnight, Jan. 1, 2000 and observed the rollover. We are continuing to observe these stations and no problems have been reported. The Windows 95 operating system must be updated with a Y2K patch which we have downloaded and will implement as per Microsoft’s recommendations. Software in this room is compliant; Microsoft Office 97 Professional is being updated to Service Release 2B, as per Microsoft’s recommendation. Anticipated completion date: November 1999.

C413: All stations have been upgraded to Windows NT Workstation Service Pack 5, as per Microsoft’s recommendation. All stations have had their BIOS’s checked and adjusted by Norton 2000. Software in this room is compliant; Microsoft Office 97 Professional is being updated to Service Release 2B, as per Microsoft’s recommendation. A major exception to this is with the SPSS software suite, version 8.0. Two applications in this suite are non-compliant, and SPSS suggests we upgrade to version 9.0, which is compliant. We are aggressively pursuing this issue with Math & Sciences. Anticipated completion date: November 1999.

C415A & C415B: All stations have had their BIOS’s checked and adjusted by Norton 2000. We are continuing to observe these stations; up until now they are functioning normally "in the year 2000." The Windows 95 operating system must be updated with a Y2K patch which we have downloaded and will implement as per Microsoft’s recommendations. Software in this room is compliant; Microsoft Office 97 Professional is being updated to Service Release 2B, as per Microsoft’s recommendation. Anticipated completion date: November 1999.
